Should you use a spreadsheet or gutter estimating software?
Fair warning: GutterBudder publishes this page and sells one side of it. So we priced the same fictional job both ways, and we start with the cases where the spreadsheet wins, because it sometimes does.

When a spreadsheet is the right answer
You are the only person who quotes. You quote a handful of jobs a week, at the kitchen table, not in the driveway. Your rates change twice a year. You do not need the homeowner to see anything but a clean number. If that is you, download our free estimate template, put your rates in, and stop reading. Paying for software you do not need is a worse mistake than using Excel.
When it stops being the right answer
The second rep. That is usually the moment. Two copies of the sheet become two sets of rates within a month, and nobody notices until a job closes at the wrong price. The other trigger is the driveway itself: homeowners decide faster when they can see the finished house and the inspection next to the number, and a spreadsheet cannot do that.
The same job, both ways
| Task | Spreadsheet | GutterBudder |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | An afternoon if you start from a template like ours. You type your rates into cells once. | A call with us where your rates go into the pricebook. About the same afternoon, done together. |
| Pricing the sample job (148 ft gutter, 4 drops, guard, tear-off) | Type nine quantities and check nine rates. Two to three minutes if the sheet is clean. Errors happen when someone overtypes a formula. | Sketch the runs, type footage per run, tick guard and tear-off. Two to three minutes. Rates cannot be overtyped by a rep. |
| Repeat pricing across reps | Every rep has a copy. Rates drift the first time someone edits their own file. You find out when a job comes in under cost. | One pricebook for the company. Change a rate once, every rep quotes the new number from that moment. |
| Changing the quote in the driveway | Possible on a phone, awkward. Most reps redo it in the truck. | Built for the phone. Change footage or swap guard on or off and the total updates. |
| What the homeowner sees | A PDF or a printout of the sheet. Looks like a spreadsheet. | A branded PDF, the AI inspection report, and a before/after visual of their own house. |
| Sharing and follow-up | Attach the PDF to an email yourself. | Export PDFs or send a private link. Emailing still goes through your own mail app; there is no automated follow-up in GutterBudder today. |
| Commission | A second sheet, or a guess. | Calculated on the quote from your bands; the rep sees it while they build. |
| Portability | Yours forever. Works offline. Opens anywhere. | Needs a signal. If you leave, you keep your PDFs and we export your quotes on request. |
| Cost | Free, apart from the hours you spend keeping the sheet honest. | A monthly subscription per company. We quote it in writing after a demo. |
Timings are from our own use on our own jobs, not a benchmark study. We have not measured close rates across other companies and we do not claim one.
What GutterBudder still does not do
No offline mode, no e-signature, no invoicing, no scheduling, no automated follow-up emails. If any of those is the reason you are shopping, a spreadsheet plus the tool you already use for that job may serve you better than we would, and we will tell you so on the call.
