Calculate profit and margin on a gutter job

Put in what the job costs you and either the price you quoted or the margin you want. The calculator shows profit, margin on price, and markup on cost, and it keeps overhead separate so the labels match what you actually included.

The formulas, so you can check them

Profit = Price − Cost
Margin = (Price − Cost) ÷ Price
Markup = (Price − Cost) ÷ Cost
Price for a target margin = Cost ÷ (1 − Margin)

Worked check: cost $1,000 and price $1,500 gives $500 profit, 33.3% margin and 50% markup. Cost $1,000 at a 40% target margin gives a price of $1,666.67 before tax. These are arithmetic examples, not a recommendation for what a gutter job should cost.

Why the overhead box is separate

Most contractors quote off direct cost and a markup, then find out at year end that trucks, insurance and the office ate the margin. If you know roughly what a job should carry (say, overhead divided by jobs per year), put it in the fourth box and the calculator shows profit both ways. Leave it blank and you get a clean gross margin.
